A Study of the Adequate Cuff of Sphygmomanometer in Korean

Abstract
In order to detect whether thee foreign cuff of sphygmomanometer (12 cm in width) which we are used is adequate in Korean adult people or not, the lower one-third diameter of upper arm were measured in 223 Korean people, grouping by age from newborn infants to 65 years of age.
We observed the difference of indirect arterial pressure which are measured with the cuff in 10 cm wide (new-made cuff) and the cuff in 12 cm wide (western type) in normal Korean adults (20 in male and 20 in female).
The adequate width of the cuff are calculated as 120% more than the diameter of the upper arm in its size.
The results are as following;
1. The lower one-third diameter of left upper arm in 223 people in each age group and their ideal width of the cuff are as following, respectively.
2~5- yrs group; 5.0¡¾0.4 cm and 6.0 cm
6~10 yrs group; 5.2¡¾0.7 cm and 6.5 cm
11~20 yrs group; 7.1¡¾0.9 cm and 8. 5 cm
21~50 yrs group; male 8. 2¡¾1. 0 cm
10 cm
female 7.6¡¾0.7 cm
51~65 yrs group; 7.5¡¾1.4 cm and 9. 0 cm
2. We found that the adequate width of the cuff is about 10 cm in Korean adult people.
3. The difference of the blood pressure which are measured with the cuff in 10 cm wide and the cuff in 12 cm wide are statistically significant (p<0, 001) and it seems to be more effective in diastolic pressure than in systolic pressure, respectively 11. 5% and 7%, but the reason is uncertain.
4. It is adaptable for the ideal width of the c --ff in our present study are to be in smaller in size than in foreign standard data.
